Hair Pressing Demonstration
Today, I did a demonstration on Hair Pressing. It's kind of an old-fashioned, yet still very popular, technique of temporarily straightening and smoothing very course, curly hair. There are many types of pressing combs that are used for this process. Some are long for long hair and short for short hair. Some have wider teeth, while others have very close teeth for a smoother result. Some combs are electric with a built-in thermostat and some are heated in an electric Marcel-type of heating unit that looks similar to a tiny oven. Today, we used both types and each student practiced sections of a manikin head. They were excited to try it, but also nervous because the irons got so hot. We used the thermostat iron set at 400-degrees. The unregulated iron needed to be tested each time using a piece of light paper. If the paper turned brown, then the comb would burn the hair. There was alot of brown paper, but I'm proud to say there was no burned hair, or skin (thank goodness). We were very careful and followed safety rules and procedures. This was a fun lesson and the students had a fun day.

Hi Rhonda
Congrats on getting your blog up and running.
The ironing you describe reminds me of what I used to do back in Canada in the 60's. We didn't use curling irons. Instead, I set the clothes iron on low (but hot enough to iron), lay my hair across the ironing board and worked out the kinks. We all had long straight hair parted down the middle in the style worn by Gloria Steinem! :)

P.S. Now my hair is just short and naturally curly.
Nice blog. I like the pink!
Megan (from FCTS and your Web 2.0 class).
You forgot to mention the smell from the iron, smelled like you were burning the school down.
Like your blog, Rhonda... nice color scheme... goes with the trade... and I learned a bit about hair pressing... and who said blogs wouldn't make me smarter???
Rhonda, we could add some images of the demonstration, or even a video.
Hi Rhonda -
Your blog is great.
Congratulations to your student who took home the medal!
It seems that a blog could be very instrumental with your classes. As Jim mentioned a video clip of you performing the different techniques would be real cool. But, like you, I'm taking it one step at a time.
Super job!
